Plays y BreninPlas y Brenin is located at the heart of Snowdonia National Park, surrounded by an upland landscape. The original core of the buildings within the centre was a hotel and is Grade II listed.

The centre runs a year round programme of mountain sports courses including rock climbing, mountaineering, scrambling, hillwalking, orienteering, mountain biking, skiing, kayaking and canoeing.

Residential courses typically extend from two to nine days and there is also a large day visitor programme of activities taking place throughout the year.

Plas y Brenin is owned by Sports Council Trust Company (SCTC).

Facilities and users

The facilities include a range of outdoor adventure facilities including:

  • Canoe rolling pool
  • Dry ski slope
  • Climbing walls
  • Low ropes course to complement the natural outdoor amenities supported by classrooms
  • Meeting rooms
  • Dining facilities
  • Hotel and self-catering facilities.

The centre hosts over a third of all outdoor qualifications in the UK, with many governing bodies and international associations either based on-site or hosting regular events.

Courses are categorised into residential, non-residential and off-site courses, with one third being formal qualifications and two thirds being skills-related courses.

In addition to qualification courses, the centre delivers outdoor skills and safety training courses in climbing, mountaineering, wild water and sea paddling, rope access, first aid, mountain rescue, and alpine climbing.

Operation

Plas y Brenin is currently managed by the Mountain Training Trust (MTT). MTT is a registered charity, set up by the British Mountaineering Council, the Mountain Leader Training Board, and the United Kingdom Mountain Training Board, specifically to run the centre.

Plas y Brenin has achieved a highly commended score of 75% in Quest.
