TeamGB rattles up the medal table to 11th place after a golden day on the bike and boat

cycling

Cyclist Bradley Wiggins won the men's time trial to become Britain's most-decorated Olympian, after rowers Heather Stanning and Helen Glover claim TeamGB's first gold of the Games.

Wiggins’ gold was complemented by the bronze won by his British team-mate and Tour de France runner-up, Chris Froome.  Wiggins' win takes his tally of Olympic medals to seven - four golds, a silver and two bronzes.

The achievement of Heather and Helen, the team’s first ever female gold medalists, is all the more remarkable as the pair only started rowing together two years ago.   Like the rest of the team, the pair have benefitted from the world-class facilities Redgrave Pinsent Rowing Lake, home to British Rowing.  Sport England has invested £10 million of funding into facility, ensuring first-class facilities for the team.

For those whose interest in rowing has been awakened by recent medal success and looking for something in their local area, British Rowing has over 160 centres providing a warm welcome to both new and past rowers - offering them flexible ways to get involved. Using wider and more stable boats to bring rowing to a wider audience, Explore Rowing programme is successfully laying the foundations for anyone inspired to have a go.

There was also more success in the pool with Michael Jamieson taking his first Olympic silver medal in the 200m breaststroke, building on the bronze medal success of Becky Adlington earlier in the week. With these inspiring performances, the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) has a wide range of programmes for those wanted to dive into the pool.  From the British Gas ASA Learn to Swim Pathway, to swim your way to fitness with Swimfit, and through to taking your swimming to the next level through the England Talent Programme, there is a something for all abilities at www.bigsplash.co.uk.

And with more action in the velodrome in the next few days, cycling promises to take more of the limelight with potential medal success. To find out how you can get involved, visit http://www.britishcycling.co.uk/ to and join the 2 million people already enjoying cycling once a week.
