The penultimate day of competition
at London 2012 has once again proved golden day for Team
GB.
Runner Mo Farah, boxer Luke Campbell and
kayaker Ed McKeever all won gold, while diver Tom Daley and
kayakers Liam Heath and Jon Schofield won bronze in their
respective events.
Team GB have now won 28 gold medals, with
opportunities to win more still to come on the final day of
competition.
Kicking off the gold rush, McKeever won the
K1 200 kayak final, with teammates Heath and Schofield following up
with a bronze shortly after in the K2 200 final. To help those
inspired by these performances, British Canoe Union’s Go Canoeing programme is
opening up the sport to new participants and encouraging those with
some canoeing experience to take to the water more regularly and
become more active in the sport. By providing a range of
captivating and inspiring opportunities and resources the
initiative aims to demonstrate to the nation how fun, sociable and
accessible canoeing can be.
Luke Campbell became the first boxer from
Britain to claim top prize in the bantamweight category since 1908.
The battling boxer from Hull earned Team GB another gold and was in
tears after a noisy Anglo-Irish tear-up. In the last year 27
grassroots clubs benefited from Sport England investment, helping
the next generation of boxers enjoy the sport. Those inspired to
take part can go to boxing’s
website to find a local club.
Diving star, Tom Daley, also put in a
stunning performance to come away with a bronze medal after a
closely fought final. Daley trains at the Plymouth Life
Centre, which has benefited from £2 million of investment from
Sport England’s Iconic Facilities Olympic legacy fund. As
well as diving, the centre is major hub for sports including table
tennis, badminton and netball, giving the community the opportunity
to enjoy a world class facility next to our country’s Olympic medal
winners.
Finishing off the gold rush, Mo Farah,
added to the gold he’s already won in the 10,000m with gold in the
5,000. As well as normal club and group activities, Athletics
Community Days are being held by clubs and Run England groups
across England from 12 to 29 August, for those inspired by his
outstanding performances. For more information, visit
the England Athletics website.
