Parliamentary Fellowship Scheme
Sport England‘s Parliamentary Sports Fellowship Scheme
aims to build a constructive dialogue and a stronger understanding
of sport in Parliament.
The Fellowship, launched in 2005, helps Parliamentarians to
develop a greater understanding of the benefits of sport by
matching them with a sporting organisation for 18 months.
MPs and Lords spend seven days over the course of their
Fellowship with their partner organisation to gain a real and
practical insight into the work that they do and learn about how
sport can enrich communities.
Employees from the sporting organisation then spend three
sessions shadowing their Fellow to learn about how Parliament
works.
Not only does the Fellowship provides a channel for
parliamentarians to support and advise national governing bodies
(NGBs) on the best ways of engaging with the political process, it
also shows them how sports policy is developed and affected.
The scheme also allows governing bodies and national partners to
show how they engage with schools, local communities and athletes
across the country, to get more people taking part in sport and
achieving at their highest level.
By taking part in the scheme, parliamentarians can witness the
delivery of a lasting sporting legacy for 2012 and beyond–
something no other host nation has ever achieved.

Angela Smith MP and the British Mountaineering Council
(
BMC
)
In 2007 Angela Smith MP (Stocksbridge and Penistone) worked
with the British Mountaineering Council to celebrate and promote
mountaineering, attending a reception at No 10 and the BMC’s
AGM.
To support the work of mountain rescue teams, Angela joined in a
simulation rescue. Angela joined the Buxton, Kinder, Edale and
Glossop rescue teams to take part in a training exercise in the
Derbyshire Peak District. The search and rescue and casualty
evacuation was used to highlight the work of mountain rescue teams
and raise public awareness.
Angela also took part in an introductory rock climbing weekend
at Sport England’s national centre for climbing at Plas y Brenin,
North Wales. During the course she was taught the basics of
climbing, including all the safety aspects such as using the
correct knots!

Stephen Hammond MP and the Amateur Swimming Association
(
ASA
)
Stephen Hammond MP’s Fellowship in 2007 focussed on a number of
areas including increasing participation, legacy, health and
performance. He visited facilities across London, learning about
issues affecting swimming such as the role of the pool operator;
the ways in which design determines pool usage; and the
restructuring
of the swimming landscape.
Stephen had the opportunity to hear about retention strategies
and provision requirements for top class performance.
He also visited Sport England and S&P Architects to find out
about the importance of
design, planning and funding in the sport.
London Swimming colleagues were hosted by Stephen in Parliament for
three days
where they met with fellow London MPs; attended several briefing
sessions and
analysed an MP’s case load.
