The Department for Culture, Media and Sport is seeking to
recruit up to 5 people to serve as members of the Board of Sport
England.
Time commitment
Two days per month on average.
Location of meetings
The Board meets seven times a year, generally in London.
Remuneration
An attendance allowance of £218 per day is offered and travel
expenses will be reimbursed.
Term of Appointment
The appointments will be for a period of up to 3
years and are expected to start in May 2010.
Background
Sport England’s mission is to create a world-leading community
sport system – one where increasing numbers of people play sport
regularly, enjoy the experience of doing so, and have every
opportunity to fulfil their potential. As the first step towards
this goal, it has set specific and measurable targets to achieve by
2012/13:
- One million people doing more sport
- A 25% reduction in the number of 16- to 18-year-olds who drop
out of at least five key sports
- Improved talent development systems in at least 25 sports
- A measurable increase in people’s satisfaction with their
experience of sport
- A major contribution to the delivery of the five hour sports
offer for children and young people.

The roles
Sport England has a non-executive board of up to twelve members
led by the Chair, Richard Lewis. The Board has overall
responsibility for the performance of Sport England and concerns
itself primarily with strategy, governance, finance and oversight
of delivery.

The people
All the successful candidates will have:
- Significant experience of leadership at either an executive or
non-executive level;
- An excellent understanding of the different operational
contexts of the public, voluntary and private sectors
- The skills and experience to influence decision making at Board
level
- A passion for the community aspects of sport, particularly
increasing participation
- A commitment to promoting diversity and equality.
In addition, candidates will have skills and recent senior level
experience in at least one of the following areas:
- Finance
- Governance, preferably in the public sector;
- Sport, as either an elite participant, senior administrator or
leader of sport development.
