Development Plans
The Planning and Compensation Act 2004 put in
place a hierarchy of development plans. These include:
- Regional spatial strategies; these outline strategic priorities
and policies and also form part of the statutory development plan
for individual local authority areas;
- Local development frameworks; made up of a number of
development plan documents[DPD] including a core strategy, area
action plans for areas of change and development, and development
control DPDs; and
- Supplementary planning documents [SPD], which give further
detail on approved policies and how they work; these can include
topics such as planning contributions for sport and
recreation.
It is planned to replace regional spatial
strategies with regional strategies, from the spring of 2010.
It is intended the new strategies will include ‘priorities for
widening access to culture, media and sport’.
