Growth area joint pilot projects: Milton Keynes
Aim
This was a partnership project, promoted by
Sport England with the support of Milton Keynes Council and English
Partnerships. The aim was to prepare an SPG for the urban
area of Milton Keynes, in the context of proposals for growth
contained in the Milton Keynes Draft Deposit Local Plan
(2002).
Benefits achieved so far
Milton Keynes Council's estimate of the amount
collected by the authority in the financial year 2007-08 is
£5,805,626
From the adopton in January 2005 of
the ‘Planning Obligations SPG for Leisure, Recreation and
Sports Facilities’, to July 2006 Milton Keynes Council secured some
£6.9M (July 2006). Seven key developments contributed to this
figure:

There are six local delivery vehicles covering
the MKSM area. These are:
- Aylesbury Vale Advantage; who have
commissioned work on built sports facility needs;
- Luton Gateway; where a study of
infrastructure needs, including sports needs, has been carried
out;
- Milton Keynes Partnership; which uses
the Milton Keynes tariff to collect developer contributions for
permissions granted in defined development areas on the western and
eastern flanks of the existing Milton Keynes built up
area;
- Renaissance Bedford; which was preparing
an Integrated Development Programme, outlining
all infrastructure needs in the area during 2009;
- North Northants Development Company;

the Corporation published a Sports Facility Strategy in
2009, for incorporation in the LDF core strategy and planning
obligations SPD.
