Putting policy into practice

Policy is put into practice through a variety of means, including the implementation of development plans, the setting of clear expectations as to the financial contributions expected as part of new development, and the influencing of decision-making. In this section, Sport England has gathered together guidance and practical examples of how the interests of sport and active recreation can be promoted in these ways.

1) Assessing Need and Demand

Local authorities need to carry out assessments of need and demand based on the typology and method outlined in the Companion Guide to PPG17. A number of strategic planning tools which have been developed by Sport England which could be used to help assess demand and provision.

2) Determining Planning Applications

Sport England has a specific remit from Government to be consulted on any proposals for development which affect playing pitches.

3) Design Matters

We continue to seek to provide generic best practice design advice and requirements for building types and sporting activities covering a range of sports through our Facilities and Planning Centre of Excellence.

4) Protecting Playing Fields

We believe that to ensure that informed decisions can be made by local authorities on the future of a playing field, that all local authorities within England should have an up to date playing pitch strategy.
