Active Colleges
Further education and sixth form colleges play a significant
role in maintaining and growing their students' interest in sport
and physical activity. They can also provide significant
opportunities for students to try out new sports.
It aims to get more further education students taking part in
sport regularly - for at least 30 minutes once a week, as well as
reducing the number of young people dropping out of sport between
16 and 1.
As a result Sport England has developed Active Colleges within
our Youth and Community Sport Strategy 2012-17.
Active Colleges is a £25 million investment ring-fenced to
benefit students in further education. This funding is
deployed through two key strands:
- College Sport Makers – Sport England is investing up to £17
million over five years to create 150 full time sports
development professionals working in the further education sector.
Their role is to link colleges with community sport opportunities
in order to widen the offer for students; raising student
participation in sport and reducing the drop out of young people
from sport, especially at 16 and 18 years old. They will also help
national governing bodies make their sports more appealing and to
college students.
- Further Education Activation Fund – Up to £8 million will be
invested in revenue projects that will increase regular sports
participation of students in colleges. Applications can be made for
funding awards of between £30,000 - £150,000 over one to three
years.
