The Active Universities Themed funding round closed on
23 June 2010. As with our previous themed funding rounds, demand
for funding outweighed the level of funding available.
All applications have now been rigorously assessed and 47
applications have been encouraged to progress to stage 2 of the
application process.
Sport England convened an Expert Advisory Panel of key HE sector
representatives to check and challenge the robustness of our stage
1 decisions. The panel concluded that Sport England’s assessment
and decision process was fair, robust and objective. They felt a
very strong portfolio of projects had been encouraged by Sport
England, to the next stage.
Progression to stage 2 of the process does not guarantee that
the applications will be successful and receive funding; this
remains a competitive process, with only the strong applications
moving forward.

About Active Universities
Sport England’s themed rounds of National Lottery funding tackle
gaps in sporting participation, to complement our other funding
programmes.
We are planning to run up to three themed rounds in each year of
our current funding strategy.
If you wish to apply to the Active Universities themed round,
you must ensure that your project:
- Is strongly focused on sport for higher education students
enrolled at a university
- Directly addresses our objectives for this round
- Is for £10,001 or over.
If your project is not appropriate to this theme it may be
better suited for a subsequent theme or one of our other funding
programmes, such as the Small Grants Fund.
Demand can far outstrip the availability of funds and therefore
this is a highly competitive process. A total of £10m National
Lottery funding is available for this theme so unfortunately we
will not be able to fund every application, however justifiable and
worthwhile the project may be.
For example, our Rural Communities themed round attracted over
500 applications, of which only 30 projects were encouraged to
progress to the second stage of bid development.
It is vital therefore that projects are designed specifically to
address the demands of this particular theme as we would prefer not
to waste your time, effort and money in creating and submitting
applications that are likely not to be supported.
We have created a factsheet which analyses Sport England's
Active People Survey data on 18-21 year olds.
