Health and safety policy

Things to Think About

  1. Do you have a documented health and safety policy covering all key activities and sites (eg head office, training and competition venues, clubs etc) and contractors, which has been approved by the board? Does it comply with legislative requirements and any specific requirements of your sport?
  2. Do you have appropriate insurance arrangements, policies and levels of insurance in place (eg employers’ liability and professional indemnity)?
  3. Do you have appropriate/documented procedures in place to manage health and safety issues, such as accidents, security incidents, fire and emergency evacuation? Are the necessary resources in place (eg trained first aiders, fire wardens etc)?
  4. Are your policy and associated procedures for dealing with health and safety issues easily accessible (eg on the website)? Have they been communicated effectively to and are they understood by athletes, athlete support personnel, board members, employees, volunteers, members and participants?
  5. Do you have a competent individual with responsibility for health and safety who ensures compliance with the policy/procedures and that these are kept up to date? Has that individual received the appropriate training?
