Local government

Local government spends approximately £1 billion per year on sport and leisure - more than 50% of the total resources available to sport every year.

Sport England has always worked closely with local authorities to help them develop sport in their area. And we will continue to do so as we deliver our strategy for 2008-2011.

Our team of local government experts - who work nationally, regionally and locally - provide advocacy, advice and support to local councils.

We have produced a range of tools, publications and guidance to help local authorities increase the quantity and quality of opportunities to take part in sport.

Our work also involves brokering relationships to help national governing bodies and local councils work together and reach shared goals.

Promoting joint investment opportunities is particularly important, especially where councils have a clear strategic commitment to sport and leisure.
