Who needs to read the report?

This report will be of interest to sport practitioners particularly Chief Leisure Officers; Heads of Service and County Sport Partnership Directors who are looking to increase sports participation in their area.

Why will it help you?

The report is based on evidence from 25 local authorities that included NI8 as part of its Local Area Agreement. As well as outlining the reasons for its inclusion the report looks at the resources and partnerships involved and the challenges local authorities faced. Real examples are used throughout and will give practitioners an insight into some of the challenges and solutions adopted. It concludes with the support and interaction councils want from Sport England.

What are the key findings?

  • Improving health and well-being is the fundamental reason NI8 was included in those LAAs, backed up by having a strong evidence measure and measurement tool in Active People
  • In most single tier areas the local authority was the named lead for NI8. In two-tier areas the CSP was responsible
  • Partnerships and delivery plans are important and an overarching delivery plan seemed to result in stronger partnerships
  • Performance monitoring is not strong outside of Active People and data interpretation was an area needing more attention
  • NGBs were named or seen as a potential partner
  • Concerns were expressed about the potential impact of efficiency savings and threats to levels of future investment. Delivering NI8 with limited budgets would be a challenge

What support did councils say they want from Sport England?

  • Active People Survey – support in using the data and tools provided
  • More advocacy material and case studies needed
  • Accelerating the brokering of relationships between local authorities and NGBs
