Updated: March 2013
The Local Sport Profile tool has been developed to help local
authorities in England to generate a sporting profile for their
area in the form of charts and tables, bringing together data on
sporting participation and provision.
This data is fundamental to local authorities and other partners
involved in developing and delivering sporting opportunities in
their communities.
The profiles were introduced in Autumn 2010, updated in March
2011, February 2012 and March 2013 to include data from
Active People Survey
6 released in December 2012.
The tool provides up-to-date information including:
- Demographic data
- Health data
- Sports participation (formerly NI8)
- Market segmentation
- Facilities data with regional and national comparators
- CIPFA’s nearest neighbour comparators
- Economic performance data (sport related businesses)
New features of the 2013 updated tool include:
- Once a week (1x30) sport participation data
- Population data for 14 and 15 year olds
- For the updated health costs of physical
inactivity data, a breakdown of the costs by five disease
categories defined by the World Health Organisation as having some
relation to physical inactivity (Please note, since the
original release in March 2013, the inactivity
data has been updated in April 2013, due to a minor
error in the LA level data)
The data is taken from a variety of sources including the
Active People
Survey, Active
Places, Department
of Health and the Office of National
Statistics.

Local Sport Profile Tool here
This link will take you to an excel spreadsheet which consists
of four tabs. The first two tabs provide background
information and guidance notes. The third tab is the tool
itself, entitled 'Local Sport Profile Tool'. At
the top of the page there is a drop-down menu of all the
local authorities in England (listed alpahbetically).
Select the local authority from the drop-down menu box and the
tool will produce a wide range of practical sports intelligence
appropriate to that local authority.
The tool also presents benchmarking opportunities by also
providing useful regional, national and 'nearest neighbour'
comparators.

An interactive web tool enabling users to access the
small area participation estimates and
generate local sport maps showing participation at the middle
level super output area (MSOA) is freely available. Maps can be
generated at any geographic level and facility data can be
overlaid. The maps provide an insight into how participation varies
within a local authority.
