Local authority analysis
While the satisfaction survey was primarily
for use by our funded sport partners, the survey data contained
useful information for local authority partners.
Using the 2009 data, we commissioned
Ipsos-MORI to undertake further analysis of the findings to find
the most important drivers of satisfaction that are relevant to
local authorities. This
presentation gives plenty of detail on the background to the
survey, the methodology, its relevance to local authorities and the
key findings.
The further analysis involved testing the
drivers of satisfaction across the 15 sports most relevant to local
authorities. These were selected on the basis of being those sports
that local authorities either provide facilities for, directly
deliver through their leisure centres or sports development
functions or support local sport clubs to deliver.
The 15 sports were also analysed in three
different ways – as a whole, those sports which were hall-based and
those that leant themselves to mass participation events. This was
to assess if there were any discrete differences between certain
types of sport.
Findings
Overall the ranking of drivers of satisfaction
for local authority-relevant sports tends to be in line with the
ranking based on total sample. There are no significant differences
in terms of expectations overall
The most important drivers of satisfaction for
local authority relevant sports are:
- Release & Diversion
- Exertion & Fitness
- Facilities & Playing Environment
- Ease of participating
The least important were satisfaction with
coaches and officials.
Within those most important domains, certain
components are most important in driving the overall satisfaction
levels. These are the factors that have most weight in determining
an overall satisfaction score

It is important to note that the top six components which drive
satisfaction all relate to the intrinsic, quality of life benefits
which sport can deliver. These relate directly to physical health
outcomes such as improving fitness but also mental health outcomes
such as relieving stress and feeling better about yourself; all of
this underpins the important role sport has in delivering against
these valuable social outcomes. Another important component of
satisfaction is the ability to get the right levels of physical
exertion – the desired level can vary over a lifetime and it is
clear that responding to this through effective programming will
help drive up satisfaction.
There are significant differences by groups of
sport:
– Facilities and playing environment, Exertion and fitness and
performance are more important for Mass participation / Events
– Release and diversion, Value for Money and people & staff
are more important for Sports hall
There are also significant differences in the drivers by
engagement level:
– Coaching is far more important for Talent Pool
– Ease of participating is less important for Talent Pool
– Exertion and fitness is more important for participants while
people and staff has more impact for Club members
