Lords debate on obesity

Sports Policy News

Labour Peer Lord Pendry last week introduced a House of Lords debate on obesity, looking at the importance of sport and physical activity as a preventative measure.  Lord Pendry outlined some of the successful initiatives NGBs have developed to reach the one million target, such as Free Swimming, British Cycling’s Skyride and Cricket’s Chance to Shine.

In addition to this, Lord Rosser spoke about Sport England’s work with young people, commenting on the valuable time he spent on the Sport England fellowship scheme which allowed him to experience how Sport England works with different projects.  During the speech he highlighted the investment Sport England has made to NGBs and the work they are doing to address the school drop off.  Lord Rosser also spoke of the progress being made in reaching the one million target, directly citing the latest Active People figures.  Lord Rosser also outlined some of the specific interventions NGBs are undertaking to deliver greater levels of participation such as Canoe England’s Paddle Power.
