Queen’s Speech
Gordon Brown has delivered the last Queen’s
speech before the next general election. Outlining his priorities
for the new legislative session, the Prime Minister introduced 11
new bills and 3 carry over bills. At present the timeframe for
completion of these Bills remains unclear. However, with
approximately 70 days of parliamentary business before the next
general election it is unlikely that the Government will be able to
pass all of the legislation announced today.
The latest day that a general election can be
called will be the 3rd of June, with the likely date for an
election due to be the 6th of May. The Government will need to pass
the Bills before this date if they are to be ratified.
